Mental Health Program

Our support programs provide support services to individuals with a severe and persistent mental illness by assisting them to develop and maintain the skills needed to live independently in the community.

Staff provide support areas
in the following areas:
  • self-care
  • personal safety
  • health and wellness
  • time management
  • communication skills
  • illness management
  • financial management
  • nutrition
  • leisure and relationships
  • vocational interests
  • educational goals
  • advocacy around housing issues

There is generally no time limit on how long participants may receive support.  As long as participants follow their Mental Health Plan and continue to work on goals, support is provided.

Housing Options

While participants are actively involved in the support program, the following housing options are available:

Supported Independent Living
Participants choose their accommodation from market housing and receive a rental subsidy to make it affordable.

Community Living Support Program
The Community Living Support Program includes the same support services as the other programs. Participants, however, do not receive a subsidy from Progressive Housing, but may be in other subsidized housing programs, living in the family home, or do not have financial need for a subsidy.

Shared Housing Program
Progressive Housing Society has three shared houses in Burnaby.  Each house is shared by five people and each tenant has a private bedroom. Common areas are shared. Participants receive a rental subsidy to make their accommodation more affordable.

Gilmore Transition Program
Our Gilmore House transitional home offers affordable housing shared by five people. It provides support services that are more intensive and the program is time limited to a two-year stay.

Support Workers work in teams of three and generally work with people on a rotational basis. Appointments are a minimum of once per month and a maximum of two times per week. The amount of support varies according to need.  Services are determined through mutual planning with participants and their Case Managers at Burnaby Mental Health Services.

All referrals for these programs must be made through the Community Residential Coordinator at Burnaby Mental Health and Addiction Services.

Progressive Housing Society programs are based on the principles of recovery and psychosocial rehabilitation.
